Sand Suction Vessel

A sand suction vessel, also known as a sand dredger or a sand pump dredger, is a specialized vessel designed for dredging sand from the seabed, rivers, lakes, or other water bodies.  It is commonly used in construction, land reclamation, beach nourishment, and maintenance dredging projects.

The main purpose of a sand suction vessel is to remove sediment, including sand, silt, and other materials, from the water bottom and transport it to a different location.  These vessels are equipped with powerful pumps and suction systems that can extract large volumes of sand from the seabed or riverbed.



The typical components of a sand suction vessel include:
Hull: The main body of the vessel that provides buoyancy and stability.
Suction System: This system consists of suction pipes, drag heads, and suction pumps. The suction pipes are lowered into the water and directed towards the sediment to be extracted.  The drag heads at the end of the suction pipes loosen the sand and create a suction effect. The suction pumps then suck the sand and water mixture from the seabed into the vessel.
Processing Equipment: Once the sand and water mixture is onboard the vessel, it goes through a separation process. This process involves separating the sand from the water and other debris.  The separated sand is usually stored in onboard compartments or discharged through a pipeline to a designated location.
Navigation and Propulsion: Sand suction vessels are equipped with navigation and propulsion systems to enable movement and precise positioning during dredging operations.
Storage and Discharge Systems: Sand suction vessels have storage compartments or hoppers to hold the dredged material. Some vessels have onboard processing systems that can dewater the sand, making it suitable for immediate use. Others transport the sand to a separate facility for further processing or disposal.



Sand suction vessels come in various sizes and configurations, ranging from small, shallow-draft vessels suitable for river dredging to large, self-propelled vessels capable of operating in deep waters. They play a crucial role in maintaining waterway navigation, replenishing eroded beaches, and supporting infrastructure development projects near water bodies.
